Described as ‘one of the biggest events in the business calendar in Plymouth’, the awards honour ‘those driving Britain’s Ocean City forward’, celebrating ‘businesses who contribute economically, culturally and socially as Plymouth strives to become Europe’s premier waterfront destination’. Sponsored by the University of Plymouth, the awards showcase local enterprises over a broad, and growing number of sectors, lauding many of the city’s prime success stories.

Founded 6 years ago by Mike Chetwynd (Director) and Harry Solomon (Master Bat Maker), Wombat Cricket has grown to be the premier cricket bat company in Devon. Producing the finest handmade cricket bats from English grown willow sourced by our sister company Wombat Willow. Along with providing a high-quality range of pads, gloves and kit bags. We are one of only a few companies in the UK that do the whole process from tree through to a finished cricket bat.

The willow company has seen very fast growth since it was founded and is the main specialist cricket bat willow company in the southwest. To be shortlisted for the third consecutive year (2017, 2018, 2019) for Small Business of the Year and Young Business Person of the Year is a massive achievement for us. The judges this year, which included local business and Higher Education leaders, as well as media, were also keen to hear about our ‘Handmade products and making processes, as well as business expansion and different areas of business activity’.

Chuffed about the win, Wombat Cricket Master Bat Maker Harry Solomon said, “It is a great achievement for myself and Wombat Cricket, really means a lot to be recognised as Young Business Person of the Year, particularly when up against such impressive local businesses and other young business men and women. Over the past 12 months, the Wombat companies have both seen strong business growth and a lot of hard work, time and investment has been put in. From moving to our new workshop in South Brent, increasing the number of handmade cricket bats being made, completing our first full harvest of willow trees and taking on our first international export order of clefts. It has been an exciting past 12 months and a strong stepping stone for us to push on and keep growing the Wombat Brand.”
